Cheap Winter Break Activities

It’s almost time for winter break! I’m excited to spend time with my teens during the long school break, but it can be hard to come up with things that everyone will enjoy. It might be tempting to stay home and rest, but having no plans for too many days can quickly make us tense and uneasy. This is a sign that we need to start planning fun things to do on vacation right away!

Bakery Adventure: Make a plan to visit all the bakeries in the area and enjoy a tasty treat at each one. You can take your cookies home or give them to your grandparents or a friend. For a fun and different experience, go on a silly trip early in the morning while still in your pajamas.

Room Makeover: If you want to bring a room to life in your house, give it a makeover. Everyone should be involved in the job, whether it’s remodeling the family room or rebuilding the basement to meet your teen’s needs. Change the way the furniture is arranged, look for free stuff on Nextdoor or Freecycle, replace old decorations with new ones, and then enjoy the space you’ve planned together.

Today is Local Tourist Day. Have your students research the best places to visit in your area and make a list of the ones they have to see. You’ll be amazed at the secret gems that are right in your backyard, waiting to be found. Take a day to see your city from a different point of view.

Christmas Lights Adventure: Do you remember how much fun it was to drive around with your kids and look at Christmas lights? You can still make magic happen even if your teens are getting close to being old enough to drive. Play holiday music, and get your favorite cookies and hot cocoa from a nearby café. Then, have them look up the best light shows in your area so you can all enjoy the beautiful lights together as a family.

On our first night at Trails End, we were surprised when a magician came to each table and made us and our kids laugh. His card tricks were really cool! He even did the trick where he identified my mother-in-law and made the signature of one of my daughters appear out of nowhere on a playing card, with the signature of the other daughter on the back!

A silent dance, balloon animal making, and painting donuts were just a few of the activities planned to keep people busy all day. A lot of people enjoyed the donuts, and we did some of these things, too. But seeing the smiles on the faces of the younger kids made me miss when my own kids were that age. As kids, I could see them going all out for the silent dance, but now that they’re teens, their parents make them feel so bad about themselves.

As night fell, Arcadia Adventures became very lively. It looked like a kid-friendly version of a busy casino! More than one hundred games were on the bottom floor. Kids could play them, earn tickets, and then trade them in for gifts. If you’re feeling brave, you can try a rock climbing wall, a laser tag course, a laser tag field, or any of the above virtual reality activities.
